Noise Testing
Have you been asked for a sound test by Building Control?
Noise testing in residential conversions was introduced in 2003 and falls under Approved Document E of the Building Regulations. The requirements stipulate that at least 10% of all party elements within converted or new build properties should be tested for sound insulation performance.
The tests required are:
- Impact sound - eg; sound transmission through floors
- Airbourne sound - eg; sound transmission through the air from one room or to another or one dwelling to an adjoining dwelling
The tests are carried out using specialist sound testing equipment, impact sound is tested using a machine that uses electronic hammers to impact the floor surface and a sound reader is installed below to take readings. Airbourne sound is tested by siting a machine that sends out sound waves and a sound reader is installed in the adjoining room or dwelling to take readings.
Why choose us?
- Our Survey Office can advise you when you are next in your area
- Testing and calculation of results are usually completed within 48 hours
- Our prices are competitive
- We offer advice and support if your site does not pass the test and reduced fees for re-tests
When is the site ready for testing?
Sound insulation testing should take place "pre completion" stage, ie, when windows and doors are in place. We will need power on site for the acoustic testing equipment and a quiet site to achieve the best result.
What if my test fails?
First, the good news re-test fees are discounted by 50%.
Secondly, we offer advice on what you need to do where a property fails a test. If you are a less experienced developer we recommend you instruct us to design details prior to construction, or to deal with building control, or for a project-tailored design review.
